Biography

Gary W. Jay, MD, FAAPM, FACFEI, is a neurologist and pain management specialist currently serving as Clinical Professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Dr. Jay has worked in pain medicine since 1980. For the first 25 years of his career, he was a private practitioner running a tertiary care interdisciplinary pain center and worked with pharmaceutical companies as a consultant part-time. In 2005, he became a full-time consultant. After earning his medical degree in 1976 at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Jay completed his internship and neurology residency at the same educational venue. Dr. Jay was a founder (1 of 30) of the American Academy of Pain Medicine in 1983 and 1 of 8 founders of the American Academy of Pain Management, now called Academy of Integrative Pain Medicine. He has been president of the Florida Pain Society, The American Academy of Pain Management, and the Eastern Pain Association. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the American Association for the Study of Headache (1988-1990). Dr. Jay has published 5 textbooks on headache, pain, and minor traumatic brain injury (mTBI). He has published over 160 articles, mostly in peer-review journals, as well as monographs and textbook chapters. He participated in the IMMPACT group for 8 years with many publications in the journal Pain. Dr. Jay is an active speaker in pain medicine, headache, and mTBI, a member of the Practical Pain Management Editorial Board, and professional member of the American Academy of Pain Medicine, the American Academy of Pain Management, the International Association for the Study of Pain, the American Headache Society, the American Pain Society, the American Society of Neurorehabilitation, the Eastern Pain Association, the Florida Academy of Pain Medicine, and the International Headache Society. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Pain Medicine and Fellow of The American College of Forensic Examiners Institute. He has been Senior Faculty at PainWeek, as well as PainWeekend for a decade, since its inception. Author of more than 160 medical textbook chapters, peer reviewed journal articles, and Five textbooks, the third of which (Chronic Pain) was published by Informa Healthcare, June 20, 2007. The fourth Textbook- Practical Guide to Chronic Pain Syndromes and the fifth, Clinicians Guide to Chronic Headache and Facial Pain were published by Informa Healthcare in November, 2010.
